CHRC President Tells UN Special Rapporteur on Balance in Report

Phnom Penh: The Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, Keo Remy, told the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Cambodia, Professor Vitit Muntarbhorn, to balance the report of human rights issues in Cambodia. He said that reporting according to one source will hurt the other side.

On the afternoon of March 24, 2022, the Chairman of the Human Rights Committee, Keo Remy, met with Professor Vitit Muntarbhorn via Zoom. During the meeting, the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights questioned the Chairman of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee on three issues, including the establishment of a national human rights body, democratic space in Cambodia regarding the election, and the leadership of the ASEAN Human Rights Institution, which underwent several debates in review with AICHR.

The meeting also discussed current rights issues in Cambodia, such as the NagaWorld dispute. At this point, he asked Prof. Muntarbhorn that before submitting the Cambodian human rights report to the United Nations, to ask the Royal Government to have a voice in interpreting these reports, rather than just accusations and conclusions.

"Even though he took the voice of the NGO from the opposition, we say [what needs to be said]! I do not care as long as he shows equally the effort the government has made! Has made an effort in this way. Let the critics criticize then.”

Keo Remy stated that the Special Rapporteur does not act as a spokesperson for the Royal Government of Cambodia but to balance the report submitted to the United Nations.

According to the chairman of the Human Rights Committee this afternoon, there was a lot of consensus between the government side and the UN representative.
